Unbelievable in this day and age I know but I've never bid on anything on ebay before! I've now spotted a pair of shoes which are very high up on my wishlist, I'm fairly confident they're genuine so I've placed a bid and I'm watching the item but I'm not sure what else, if anything, I should be doing. The auction ends later today.
I understand this is a sensitive subject as I may end up competiting for shoes with other members here but thought I'd see if anyone's willing to offer any general hints/tips for successful ebay bidding. Never hurts to ask...

Obviously most people don't bid until the last few seconds of the auction so make sure you watch and if you can react with a higher bid, but i like to bid within the last 10 seconds so it does'nt leave much time, good luck!

As cracky said.. as long as you've put your highest bid in, you've got nothing to lose. It's a minefield doing the last second bidding, cos unless you stick to your budget, you can get caught up in a bidding war and spend waaay to much!

i'm sure there are some sniping websites for ebay. try googling for them. they will bid for you when you can't be near pc..

Decide exactly how much you are gonna go to first and stick to it.
Better to bid late rather than early as this helps to stop shill bidders and keeps the price down but if that aint possible then stick your max bid in and fingers crossed

When an auction ends, if you send the seller a message using the "ask the seller a question" thingymajig because you want to discuss payment terms, does the seller actually receive your message, or is that facility only functional when the auction is still live?
I'm asking because I won something last week (don't get excited, no shoes) and then wanted to ask the seller where he'd prefer his payment be sent to but he never responded to any of the 5 messages I sent via that "ask the seller" ting.
Then he tried to bust an "Unpaid Item" case on me. I noticed he had other items for sale so sent him another message through one of his live auctions and I did get a response from him, so now I'm wondering if ebay stops sending your questions once the auction has ended?

It can be fuckin' useless.
Sometimes people register with Ebay and leave one email address then change email addresses and only update the important one in Ebay which can leave contact emails floating in outer space or in his messages box within Ebay which some people rarely check.
Just disagree with the dispute and state that he has failed to reply to emails and that you still want the item.
Click on his user name and send him an email through that link instead.
Sometimes they're more likely to get and or read those ones.
I think that when an auction is live, it sends the question to him as well as sticking it in his messages box but afterwards it only goes in his message box.

Cheers P, I'll keep that in mind for the future. He's retracted the unpaid item strike as I disputed it and explained that I had attempted to get in touch, plus I've got copies of all the messages I sent him.

An ebay noob question from me - is it a valid idea that I can buy something (in this example an xbox360), keep it for a few months to play a game and then sell it on for similar cash once I'm bored with it/need to buy a car? Do prices vary a lot or are there pretty much standards for equipment?
Basically - is this idea gonna get me burnt cash-wise?
