I had a pair of shoes arrive like that once, I nearly vomited all over them when I opened the box! In fact, I should have vomited in them and sent them back to the seller...
Instead I listed them up on ebay as some

Ahhhhhhh there not too bad, maybe its just the nurse in me but I sniffed em. (its like ocd annoynmous in here tonight) Its not like a lingering smell. They do smell smokey. They will be okay with thick socks and a good sanitizing.

Yeah, fuck it, get a brush and some warm soapy water and give the insides a scrub.
Dry with newspaper and air.
Sorted.
