Just spent 3k to cut down a giant-ass oak tree in my back yard. The last hurricane made it start leaning very slightly and we were told that it was only a matter of time before it was going down and likely taking a lot of things with it.(maybe even my daughter's room) So it pretty much feels like I just took 3 grand and flushed it down the fucking toilet to take down this massive, beautiful thing, that was one of the things we loved most about the house when we bought it.

3k for peace of mind, basically.

For scale. The bottom of the trunk is 5 feet in width.

I hope you kept some fire wood Tif? What with fuel prices etc.

I'd put money on the tree surgeon taking it with him.
It'll sit in his back lot a season for a few years then he'll sell it for about £15,000.
Sorry.

Yeah should definitely try and keep most of it if you can store it, people will pay a hefty price for oak.

In fact get some fucker to do you a new kitchen Smile

Ha! That's part of the deal, I guess, that he get's the wood. We had estimates as high as 5k to take it down. Unbelievable.

Cheeky bastards.
Being the geek I am, I just roughly worked out the value of the (seasoned) wood as floor board 1" thick and 8" wide.
Assuming the tree was 5' wide and 35' high you would get 1,400 board feet of timber with a seasoned value of roughly £4 per foot.
£5,600!
But seasoning would take about a year, maybe less if you've got a 20' long bath full of Linseed oil.

He's making a killing on that tbh, you should have bargained for him to do it for nothing and he keeps the wood but you get to keep enough to make a nice coffee table or something.

Or even a set of oak shelves for trainer storage Wink
