It's losing it's rubberiness.
The natural oils and salts are precipitating out of the sole.
If left the rubber would eventually go brittle.

Speaking of JMJs, am I the only one who thinks the JMJs run a tiny bit smaller than Superstars? I bought a pair in UK 11 which is what I always wear in Superstars, but the JMJs just feel smaller, I'm guessing it's because they're Ultrastars, but I haven't got any other Ultras to compare with...

Can't say about JMJ's but my Ultrastars feel about the same if not a tiny bit smaller than
my SS2's and definitely smaller than my SS1's- probably just the padded tongue though.

Weird, i've found that ultras run bigger. Could be the tongues out way i wear mine though..

I'd agree with you Wildthing i think Ultra's come up tighter and i also go up a half size when buying them otherwise its painful!
