If that's the reason decent old skool members dont post anymore then it's a real shame. Perhaps instead of focusing on making the forum harder to access for new members and potentially missing out on some quality, could you give older/more respected members access to the private area of the forum, like a VIP lounge type of set up? Maybe people who used to contribute but who may not like the current direction the forum has taken can keep in touch/share the knowledge without having to wade through the general stuff from a bunch of people they don't know? You lot could have some secret ballot shit amongst you all to see who gets the "certified" members status!
That way, with some tight moderating and regular deleting of the crap, us newer members can carry on makin fools of ourselves and huddling in corners until such time we're deemed fit for entry to the "real" SSDB or consigned to the shitlist with Adolf, Conz and Bow Down or whatever his fuckin name was.
Or something like that. Sounded good in my head

Would have to be invite only to a private thing.
Been on a few forums where it's post count, it gets silly.
Good idea though.
I would lock it, Get the intro thread public and go from there.
Have a trial run once something is decided?
Week or so...

You know that thing you're talking about Shellshock ?
It already exists !
On here.
Right now.
Only trouble is, we'd have to make it a replica of the main forum to do what you described.
At the moment, it gets used, but the majority of conversations on a given subject are done out here.
Typing the same shit twice would be a huge pain in the jeffries.

Yeah, Streak mentioned it somewhere, which is what prompted my post. Obviously I don't know what your current criteria for membership is, at a guess I'd say Specialists and Mods? But I'm talkin about inviting the old heads back and opening it up to more people, maybe create more ranks for people to work through over time to gain access (that's the gamer in me talkin!) Make it less of a secret and perhaps membership of the "inner circle" will become something to aspire to for regular members and promote better behaviour from them?
I'm probably being dense but I don't understand why you'd have to replicate threads, if something's worth saying out here to the masses, why would you want to type it again in the private section? Can you not just leave that area as it is, for topics and conversations you'd rather lurkers/noobs/twats not be privy to?
ps If we do get more ranks, can we have a "Superstar Sharpshooter" please?

Hmmmmmm....
G, your right. I seriously think there are quite a few idiots on here and I am put off from posting for that exact reason.
That said, you need people to post to keep the forum breathing.
I've been on the forum since virtually day one, as you know, but whats my post count? 300 odd? It would be buried if everyone were like me.
But of course I dont have to moderate and Im sure if I did I would do it in the exact same way as you have been.
Whats my point? Do what you feel is right and I got your back.
