Is it me or are there possibly two kinds of Qing Mings??? One variation on the Adidas online shop (Canada and/or US) and some other sites had Chinese characters/writing on the sides (near the heels), yet the ones I've seen in person/elsewhere they are absent...what gives?

The qing mings do actually have the shiny gold on the back, but it's been covered with a thin layer of fabric, so it's not very visible. I think the pics with the gold clearly visible was pics of the samples. Not sure if the thin fabric is an improvement or not though...
