Though I did go to something called a "Sample Sale" at adidas HQ here in New York and they had a bunch of different sizes so I think the word "sample" is used a couple of different ways.

maybe uk8.5 is for prototypes that might not make it into production, and samples come in full size run and used for sales reps/ photo's for press etc etc?

Pre production samples are uk 8.5 for men and uk 5.5 for women, press/photo shoots/seeding are all done with top of production stock (which means they'll ship some of the bulk order early, and by faster shipping method).
