Not sure exactly what "broken britain" is but I completly understand the point your making. People seem to treat anyone bar themselves as simply a means to an end - whether that end is personal happiness, personal wealth, whatever. There is no genuine humanity it seems thesedays. In the instances when people do help others, it's to appease themselves. Unfortunately, it's been that way throughout history. Wars are not for rights, or ideals - they are always fought for personal gain.
As a side note on corporal punishment, I sure as hell do not agree with simply due to my experiences when I was young - beating a defenceless child does not induce respect or discipline, only fear and hatred. There are many reasons people inflict corporal punishment upon children, none are ever justified.
edit: Not sure exactly where I was going with this post. I think general idea was 'Your right, people today are twats but that doesn't mean methods employed in the past were good'
