While I was out on the Goodwyn rig I was hoping to see some sharks and had only seen a couple early one morning so I was a little disappointed. After being out there about a week they had to shut down all operations and clear all the gas out of the pipes through the flair because of a problem.
The flare burnt furiously and sounded like a massive flamethrower and shook the whole rig (apparently the 25 minute burn off was enough gas to supply 3000 houses with gas for a year and cost them millions!
)
.... anyway it lit up all the water around the rig clearly and when I looked over the edge of one side I literally saw hundreds of sharks (tigers I think) going crazy (because of the flare i'm told) chasing fish just under the surface and it was one of the coolest things i've seen in my life.
