That'll be the Gemenid meteor shower.
It happens every year around this time.
Best time to be out is between 1.30 and 4 in the morning but you should see the odd meteor every now and then beforehand.
You need to be outside for a good 20 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the darkness (not the band !).
The further you can get from civilisation and street lights the better.
It's well worth it, at least once in your life !
