My wife gets a call from our daycare last Tuesday (30 November): 'We're concerned about your daughter's development when she starts in February. She needs to be able to sit up on her own and she needs to be mobile. We're concerned she might get trampled'.
Next day they call back, 'We're not concerned any longer about her mobility. We'll make sure she's fine. By the way, we've changed our policy and in addition to the $500 deposit you've already paid we will need first and last month's tuition. $3000. And we'll need it in December'. (My wife's response: 'um...it is December.)
Yesterday, by some stroke of luck, we get a call from a much closer, much cheaper daycare. We visit, everything's cool, we sign up.
Today I phone the first daycare to cancel, citing both the 'trampling' comment as well as their sudden change of policy as reasons: 'Oh, she was scheduled to start February 1. I don't think we can refund your $500 deposit...'
AARGH!!!
