Seems like we're bloggin at the same time Steve! See above bro....dab alot lightly...when you break it out of the box, give it a good few coats with the protector....it won't stop serious dirt, but main thing is to keep it on the surface, then you can 'dab' it off...brushing will pull the fabric, thus cause it to pill, esp for cotton/jersey material... 
My other reccomendation? Wear it only when a perfect sunny day - def not in rain, into puddles, etc....certainly not at a pub or concert! But thats just me....
