I have a simple but effective tip for PS3 owners - use a couple of spacers (an oblong bit of wood or metal etc) to raise it off the surface it's on (about 2-3 inches if poss). This lets the air get to the vents around the bottom of the machine and keep it cooler so therefore quieter and more efficient.
I did it today and it's worked well, the noisy fans havent kicked in at all. So thought I'd pass it on....
