Mine backplate was dented the exact same way (in transit).As you said the shoe horns,tree's woteva bang into the top of the case and dent the fooker.
I was gonna look into trying to get a replacement backplate at one stage but never got round to it!!am sure there's some about its just tracking 1 down.
TIP.If any1 ever buys a pair make sure they take the shoehorns out of the case b4 posting or they'll turn up just the same with a dented backplate
