I have to say I have mixed emotions about Obama becoming the president. On one hand, I'm glad I was around to witness such an historic event, America's first black president. For all it's faults and shortcomings, you've just got to be full of admiration for their progression. They were a country where only 40-50 years ago the notion of a non-white president was simply inconcievable. I couldn't see the general population of the UK voting for a non-white PM anytime soon.
On the other hand, I feel that the current (and previous) administration has handed him such a poisened chalice that his failure is pretty much guaranteed. There's no way the US's problems can be sorted in one term and his detractors will simply turn around and say "see, we told you black people cannot run a country properly" then we'll never see another black president for the next 200 years. I really do hope I'm wrong on this though!
