I looked into this quite a bit after it was brought to my attention on here last year.
No matter what spin is applied to the subject the fact is that the origins of this character lie in him being a servant and a black man. Period.
The whole 'Black from soot' thing is merely a smoke screen, an attempt at denying it's racist origins, which has been added to this tradition at
a much later date in a bid to provide an 'acceptable' excuse to those who practise it.

Climbing down a chimney doesn't give you an afro or ridiculously pronounced red lips.

I have to agree with dregz the origins are clearly an African being a slave. That said I'm sure there are many traditions that outsiders would find offensive, the whole of Holland can’t be racist. I think in Britain we are to quick to judge after all in some schools here its deemed offensive to sing bla bla black sheep it’s been changed to bla bla green sheep.

I think we've gone too far in this country frankly.
Things that never had fuck all to do with race now can't be referred to as being black.
It's only a matter of time until Black Pudding loses it's real name......................

I agree that it can be taken too far. For example, not being able to call a blackboard a blackboard is simply madness. It's a board. It's black. I've never been offended by that and I don't know any other black people who would be.
