i can reccomend a Gary Fisher 29er, well happy with mine, also a few of my mates have Rock Hoppers and they wouldnt change em. ... get some slick tyres for the commute then put the ones that came with the bike back on for the trail riding, the cycle to work includes accessories, so you should be able to get the slicks aswell, maybe even have enough money left to get some spare rims, to make it even easier to swap the wheels over
