Not unbearable but seriously uncomfortable. In those days you were allowed to smoke whilst getting inked and I prety much chain-smoked through that bit and it helped take my mind off it a lot. Why not get the important bit (the portrait) done on the outside of your arm where
a) it's more visible
b) less painful
Plus I think it'll be easier to work if it's on the outside of your arm with when you come to turn it into a sleeve. If it all goes tits up on the 2nd bit, at least it will be hidden away on the inside of your bicep, not the outside for all the world to see

For someone who is ticklish/sensitive as SHIT, this may not be the best idea for first tattoo.
haha what you mean tits up on the second bit?
well i know it will probably be easier and look better, but i had other ideas for the outside of the arm, which i feel are more important

and more significant to me. i was basically trying to incorporate a few ideas in the one tattoo... as to TRY prevent me from getting more lol but i can see how that becomes an issue!
maybe ill have to think about positioning a bit more. chest to shoulder... back of shoulder (but then i cant admire it as much

)... hmmmm.

I just meant that if you get a really good portrait done in Italy then go back home and get some more work done to turn it into a sleeve ay least if it does look disjointed then the majority of the secondary work would be on the inside of your arm where it's easier to hide any mistakes.

Good advice there Niko. I know quite alot of people travel for certain artists but for such a big piece that you are considering the distance may prove to be a problem.
I paid £50 an hour a couple of years ago so may well of risen now to the £60 mark Sab mentioned. I did it over a 3 month period when I could afford to do 2-3 hour sittings. If you click on the pics you should see the images larger of mine.
The inside of the bicep was a killer for the record also
Good luck with your work whatever you should decide to get

Niko....i'll echo what shellshock said!! Inside of your bicep is not the best place to get your 1st tattoo...and starting with even just a small portrait is a big ask.
All depends on ya pain threshold and how much you can take really but starting with what you've said it could be first and last tattoo you ever get.
Personally i'd start on ya shoulder more fleshy and less sensitive part so won't be as much pain involved (and work downwards over time)but your still probably looking at a good 2hr upwards for your 1st sitting.
Again what shellshock said..I'd find a good tattoo'ist were ya live have afew consultations and be 100% about what exactly your wanting and talk it through and forget about the italian ink idea

Also consider inner arm ageing skin elasticity etc. How a detailed portrait would age probably better on the outer. A portrait on old man wrinkly arms ??

Thanks for the advice guys!
If I can find someone with the portrait skills of this guy in Australia, then will do, but if not I would really like a piece done by him!! But yeh, I can understand it will be a pain in the ads even if it's in my last week or so of holidays.
Pokey you end up getting more ink? Saw ur facebook update a while back

Sab, all tattoos will go to shit once we are old and wrinkly. It'll all end up a fuzzy blob lol

Just to echo what the others are saying, the inside of the bicep does hurt the most (not unbearable though). The tribal design I've got on my arm curls round to the inside, it hadn't really hurt that much to that point, but by christ the last 20 minutes weren't any kind of fun. And I can't imagine sitting on a plane with a freshly done tattoo either. I got the bus home after my last one and by that point the blood was running down my arm onto my hand.
On the plus side it really freaked out an annoying child. Every cloud.
I always use the same guy here, takes ages to get seen because he's so good but it's worth the wait.
Fuck sake I want a new tattoo now!

pics big j?

haha they addictive are they?
im thinking maybe if i can get the linework for the entire sleeve down pat, and done maybe a few months in advance by an artist here. leaving space for the portrait on the shoulder.
basically the portrait is going to be a 'dia de los muertos" girl... and the artist i want has done a few of these and they look AMAZING! cant see myself getting it done by anyone else. otherwise i wont get that done at all

Tattoo's addictive????Just alot niko well for me anyways but i'm pretty sensible about it also and fight the urge.
Always really think about what your wanting cause once its done its there for life..So be 100% sure about the design and were its going to be.
I've currently got idea's for about 3 or 4..Which are mainly word based tattoo's but i would like a blackNred japanese peice done also

didnt you recently get work done?
RE: Show us ya tatts -
pokey27 - 04-11-10
Yes and it hurt like fook due to me being not the biggest guy in the smurf kingdom....
2hr sitting and pretty much the entire time it was probably right to my max pain threshold!!!But afew days later i was ready to go again

All depends on the person but most people find tattoo's very addictive
