Here's my precious Mk3 GTI from all the years ago when I still had a car. Not sure if I even have a pic of the Mk1 GTI I had before that.
This was tuned quite a bit from its stock form but on the outside only mildly as I hate all the teeny bodykits and huge spoilers that make the car look like something the Top Gear lads could come up with at their best.
A new paint-job, lowering springs, better brakes, sunroof and clear side markers and half clear/half red rear lights. Gave the engine a proper overhaul, ending up changing probably half the engine with high(er) quality parts. Also considered of getting a proper turbo for it but never had the time to actually get into the task. I remember the audio setup, engine project and everything else costing "enough" already.
After all that the fuel economy actually improved considerably from the original figures, even when I got more power than I had when I bought the car.

nice mate... only just learning about engine mod's, but i think alot of the time you can get better fuel economy and added bhp, dunno, like i say, im just looking into whats possible for a reasonable price, and like you , i want the exterior to look standard.. well, maybe some new rims

Yeh. From what I recall, the Mk3 tested for 141bhp on bench (~150 originally I think it was) and 172 after all the stuff I (and some of my friends) did to the engine, yet it consumed less. Funny. I was planning to chance to a better turbo at the time which would have easily given a lot more but I never bothered, was pleased with the horses I got.
And for those who think ~30bhp isn't that much of a change or addition... it might not sound much but it does make a huge difference in every day performance and I wasn't really making a race car but a comfy cruising car with still enough power not to get stomped on the road.
As for the exterior less is more, ain't it?

Nice watch Spite! I've been on the fence about it. How do you like the red? Your pic looks a bit washed out compared to the one on the site. Which is more accurate?

Nice S4 Jimmy! A beaut color...yeah, even here, used S4s n RS4s are ridiculous resale prices....
And Grimmy, thats a mofu bad ride....I was into that whole 'replace everything mode' way back when, but then I realised various limitations i.e. kids, Soups, and the fact that I can't legally push it in Canada anyhow, so I passed that all up...my new GTI is stock, but pretty fully loaded to the point where I'm pretty damn happy to leave it as is - turbo, sport suspension, wheels, HIDs, sroof, yada ydada...'cept tint and MAYBE slotted rotors
