Anyone good with computers?
Mines broke Sad

It turns on fine but when it gets to the log in screen the monitor goes onto stand by. But if I type in my password it still logs on as I can hear the log on noise

Tried changing the resolution & refresh rate in "safe mode" but it wont let me

Even the refresh rate in safe modes screwed as it takes forever to refresh if I scroll anything

And to top it all off my sounds now not working, tried testing it in directx but its not detecting a sound card

So bloody annoying I could throw it out the window! Mad

If it aint Manc its wank!

RE: Anyone good with computers?
Here y'are Con.

"Could be a a driver issue. If your friend has recently upgraded any drivers for her sound and video cards she should roll them back (although it would be obvious to her if it happened after installing new ones so it's unlikely to be this).
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/283657

Or she should do a system restore to before the problems occurred: Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore
Select a date on the calender when she knew the PC was working and restore back to that point.

If she has changed the settings in her BIOS/setup screen (for instance accidentally disabled her onboard sound and video if they were used rather than dedicated sound and video cards) she should take the side cover off and (with the power off and unplugged) remove the little button battery from the motherboard and wait a few minutes before putting it back in and booting up. Again this is very unlikely as she hasn't mentioned having a tinker with the bios settings."

RE: Anyone good with computers?
Have you got access to another monitor you could try out on it?
Does your Pc have two seperate power leads , one for the base unit and one for the monitor?

RE: Anyone good with computers?
"Sounds like her video is switching to a resolution that is unsupported by her monitor... Usually going into safe mode VGA - allows you to reset the resolution... but sometimes I've had to reload the video drivers from scratch to get to the default resolution. means uninstalling them first too if they used their own install program..."

Might be worth trying the roll back before you do an uninstall and reinstall.

RE: Anyone good with computers?
I think your right fella, sounds Driver related to me.
There is this odd thing we get at work quite often whereby the users Pc just go to standby while they are working on them and the resolution and heres the mad bit is to switch power leads from the monitor to base unit and vice versa and this resolves the problem! It shouldnt work but it does and the nerds at HP cant tell us why this works but it does!
Crazy Pc's!
